Middle school math students learn about center of mass, compression, and tension at White Hill! Thanks Julia Marrero for the pictures!
Manor 4th graders have a try at their first parachutes... they did not work so well. Students first iteration: Some added more load, some changed the canopy, and some shortened the shroud lines.
Great lesson that built upon the vocabulary that was being learned about force and motion. Building a roller coaster that will be the SLOWEST! Students started with the same number of cut paper towel tubes, tape and construction paper. (Pictures from Glenwood School) Follow up building day at Coleman, the students trying to create a loop de loop! So much learning going on. More lesson ideas on iTEAMS google docs under physical sciences force and motion. Venetia Valley's third graders... Kindergarten at Sun Valley wanted a go at it also... Another great 7th grade engineering lesson from Miller Creek. As part of their life science unit on heredity, this is a way to show how the birds and bees applies to plants... and humans. The documents are also available in the iTEAMS google doc folder for lesson plans under life science.
Molly O'Donoghue's 4th grade class spent time designing a prototype structure that Miwok's could have built using natural resources. They tested out their designs on an Earthquake shake table and re-designed based on those tests.
Eddie Gutierrez's 5th grade class experimented with parachutes in class. They all made a parachute to the same specifications. They used what they discovered to design a parachute that will carefully carry an egg safely to the ground. (see videos below)
Videos of the parachute/egg drop.... 2nd iterations coming later in the Spring....
The Miller Creek 7th grade teachers, Sue Holland, Janice Woods, and Erik Lunde, took the arm lesson from the September PD and transformed it into a bio-engineering lesson for the students to showcase their knowledge of how the arm works in creating a prosthetic arm. Video's from year 2 iteration!
Ramina Winton and I had a fun afternoon building in the Davidson shop. Adam SInger is a patient teacher and very knowledgeable about his craft. Now Ramina is ready to build some truss bridges. Ramina also learned that the Dollar Store sells signs with craft sticks attached that can work when you need craft sticks in a pinch!
Thanks Mary-Clare Neal! Fabulous math tie in with proportions and gears.
