4th grade at Brookside studied their local watershed using Google maps and then got a chance to map their playground watershed.

I did sidewalk topography with both my students and Dominican student teachers. Everyone loved it and there was some amazing discussion. The President of Dominican University happened to be walking by and the students explained what they were doing, her response, ¨So cool!¨

I forgot about this acitivity until I saw the pictures. This would be a great way to let students figure out where it would be ideal to place a dam depending on the movement of the water.

I hope to do this as a tie in with the Trout in the Classroom that we participate in each year. Learning about the local watershed, where we release the fry,delivers a powerful message to the students about protecting our water supply.
