Mike Schulist at Miller Creek worked on a new lesson with his 8th graders. How to draw a model of three cubes that have different densities. What do they look like inside? How do we draw that as a model?

Thanks for this Mike! I turned this into a two day activity where the kids made observations about the physical properties of the cubes, measured mass and volume of each cube, then calculated the density. Day two had them discuss why each cube had a different mass yet were the same size and come up with a picture representation and an explanation as to whether or not their picture agreed with the density calculations. I loved the discussion between the kids as they tried to figure out why metal was "heavy", etc. The visuals really brought it home for them! I definitely plan to use this next year.
