From Hannah Dye, 4th grade teacher at Dixie: The students worked together in teams to design buildings that would survive an earthquake of 7 or more on the Richter scale. We created a list of building codes as a class and discussed the recent earthquake in Haiti. Students discovered that much of the damage in Haiti could have been diminished if they had building codes in place.

Kathryn Cimarelli from Vallecito used this video.as her into to her erosion project.
WATCH: Pacifica Coastal Erosion Caught on Drone Video I know many of you are playing the Water Cycle game from this year's Professional Development days in your class. Here is the link to the game and a nice record sheet from NSTA. Fourth grade at Brookside
Melody Murphy, 5th grade at Glenwood, used these resources on her Google Classroom for her students to explore water. They were told to be prepared to talk about something they learned or noticed.
They then read from 'Canals and Dams' talking about the impact of humans on water (needing it for crops, etc) and what they used to tame water or get it where they need it. All this leading up to the dam project. Thanks Ed Malaret from Mary E. Silveira for these great resources. I got to see his kids in action using some of these resources. They gave them the opportunity to try new things and explore the concepts of energy and energy transfer with objects they can find in their homes. Great way to help start an dinner time conversation.
Thank you Erik Lunde from Miller Creek for these resources! From Erik: Used as an introduction to Wave Erosion to familiarize students with beach anatomy, wave erosion/deposition processes and terminology. It also introduces students on ways to engineer wave erosion protection systems. Afterwards, I will have students create an experiment testing out the erosion prevention strategies in a mini wave pool using sand and water
Who has done the topography lesson with the clear take out trays? Love to hear what you did and include any links to materials you have!
Below is a powerpoint and lesson plan Gina Tanner did with her 4th graders from Mary E. Silveira.
Referenced in the new NGSS draft frameworks. Based on the previous science standards but does have correlation charts for the new standards.
