San Anselmo Creek provides such a real-world menace to downtown San Anselmo. This project encouraged the students to think of ways they might reduce the flood danger to their own town. I bet this scenario provided tremendous buy-in for the students as they crafted their flood solutions.

Great presentation! Using the actual creek for the flood design and creating such a meaningful project. We loved the mystery science climate map too!

Way to use a real life scenario for the students to connect to! Having the real world phenomena will make me rethink when I teach these particular standards (Earth's Systems + Earth and Human Activity). Teaching this in the wet winter months makes it more relevant. Thanks!

Gives a real life scenario to a lesson. I might have to teach 3rd so I'm glad I can look back at your lesson and have something to refer back to!

I got great ideas on how to make a similar project that we do, be more meaningful to students. I liked the order that the unit was presented to students. I was so inspired by the world climate map for each student, I added it to the unit right away. .

Seeing the presentation on 3rd Grade Floods by Lindsay Hess was a great opportunity for my 3rd grade team to see how we can incorporate additional lessons such as the world map into our flood design challenge. We exposed the students to the climate zones and the traits within each, but providing a map, with them color coding it, would be a great addition. Like Lindsay, we follow the weather/climate unit with animals, plants and ecosystems, so the world map would be continued...great connections!

I loved your presentation, Lindsay! It inspired me to have my kids create slideshows for their chosen weather hazard in our weather hazards unit. They absolutely loved working on this project! Thank you for the great ideas!

Lindsey, your presentation was inspiring. As my team has already mentioned, we have incorporated several of the lead up lessons into our weather unit already. The Mystery Science video and climate maps exercise detailing the difference between climate and weather is fantastic. Despite all my efforts to teach this well, that resource is what really brought it home to the students. Thanks.
